formatting minutes & seconds, then adding them

I'm trying to get cells to format minutes and seconds ( I
always get AM & PM when I format the cell under "time").
I'm trying to add minutes and seconds to get a total time
for running a race.
Any help is appreciated.

Try using the custom format [h]:mm:ss. You will always see the AM or PM in
the formula bar, but it should'nt affect your calculation.
