formatting numbers in cell

I'm using Excel 2000; Office 2000 premium; Windows 98SE.
When I enter a numeric value (i.e. 3000) into a cell, whether it is a sheet
in a new workbook (i.e defalt format setting) or in a cell inserted into an
existing worksheet, the value shown is different (i.e. entering "3000"
returns "30" as the value; "10000" returns "100"; "30" returns "0.3", etc.)
I have tried different format settings, all to no avail.
Is this caused by a setting or is my version of excel suddenly corrupted?
Please help.

In Excel, click on Tools | Options | Edit | uncheck the "Fixed decimal
places" box | OK.
