formatting of cross reference in W2007

I am trying to change the formatting of some cross references I have in a
document. They are showing up as all caps and I need them to be initial caps
(title case).

I read some posts on this topic and it seems the \*MERGEFORMAT is my
solution. I added the \*MERGEFORMAT switch to the end of the field right
after I formatted the field the way I need it to look. But, when I update the
field after making this field change, it reverts back to all caps. What am I
doing wrong?

Suzanne:

Another MVP post stated that the \*CHARFORMAT applies the formatting of the
1st letter of the field to the remaining characters of the field. Hence, I
would end up with all caps again instead of the title case I need (only 1st
letter of each word to be capitalized).

For grins, I tried using \*CHARFORMAT. First, I formatted the field the way
I wanted it. I then toggled the field code and see there was a \h switch at
the end. I replaced the \h with the \*CHARFORMAT. When I subsequently updated
the field, I ended up with all caps again.

As followup questions, what does the \h switch do? Where can I find a
reference of all the possible switches, what they do, and the fields to which
they apply? Is a space next to the starting and ending field braces always
needed?

The \h switch makes the cross-reference a hyperlink. It appears that you can
apply a \* Caps switch. In the Insert | Text | Quick Parts | Field dialog,
if you select the REF field, then click Field Codes, then Options..., you'll
see "Title Case" as one of the options for General Switches. If you select
that and click Add to Field, it inserts the \* Caps switch (which of course
you can do manually when editing the field).

Suzanne..this works and I have been able to fix my problem. I didn't notice
the edit field dialog box before and the choices in it.

Is there some reference you know of that defines all the switches, what they
do, and the fields to which they apply?

There are excellent resources on all of Word's fields in the Help in Word
2003. Sadly, the developers of Word 2007's Help decided that Word users
don't need these. Worse still, as far as I can determine, these are not even
available online (at least not as a result of a search through Word 2007
Help, though there must surely be KB articles on these subjects).

As long as I still have Word 2003 on my machine, I can still access topics
such as "Field codes: TOC (Table of Contents) field" to get information on
all the available switches; before I abandon Office 2003 entirely, I will be
very careful to print off some of these Help topics!

backwards and W2007 help didn't provide this kind of reference material.
