formatting of the document is not correct.

I have create a simple document using Miscrosoft Word 2000
9.0.3821SR1 on WindowsNT and selected a bullet and
numbering format.I add the item with numbers like
(1)KAjkj
...
(9)XYZ
When it comes to 10'th element, its formatting changes. It
adds an extra tab space to the item like
(10) 10'th item
(11) 11'th item
This seems ridiculous.
What is this a feature or a bug..

Apparently the message I posted this morning didn't make it to the server,
so here it is again:

Word is not adding an extra tab, but because the default tab stop doesn't
allow enough space to accommodate double-digit figures in this format, the
number alone passes the first tab stop and goes to the second. This is
curable in either of two ways, both of which require you to define or modify
a numbering style:

1. Set the "Tab position at" to a position that will clear the longest
numbers in the series.

2. (Better) Align the numbers right instead of left. You may have to
experiment to get the best combination of number position and tab stop (I
like the single-digit numbers to align with the left margin, and I find that
for 12-pt text followed by a period, a position of 0.13" works out about
right, leaving adequate space between the number and the default 0.25"
indent).
