Formatting Palette disappeared

The formatting palette in word has disappeared off the right side of the
display. when viewing the palette, you can see it "zoom" off the right
side of the screen and never reappears. this is in word only. excel
palette keeps its place.

reinstalling word does not solve this problem. application running on a
15" imac.
