Formatting palette in Word 2004 for Macintosh

When I try to use the formatting palette in Word 2004 (Macintosh) it scoots
down to the far right hand bottom, out of view – and then scoots back into
the toolbar when I click it again. It is essentially un-usable. It’s like
it’s headed for the Dock, but it never appears there. It just seems to vanish
below the lower edge of the screen, out of reach.

I'd like to be able to use the formatting palette and welcome any insights.
