From Word Help, I did a search for formatting palette, and chose "Customize
the Formatting Palette." Here is the result:

Customize the Formatting Palette
1. On the Tools menu, point to Customize, and then click Customize
Formatting Palette.
2. Do one of the following:
€ To change the behavior of the Formatting Palette when it's not in use,
select the options you want under Behavior.
€ To change the effect used when the Formatting Palette is opened and
closed, select the options you want under Effects.
€ To show or hide Formatting Palette panels, select or clear the check
boxes next to the panels you want to show or hide in the Panels list. Note
The effect you choose for the Formatting Palette also applies to the
Toolbox.
