Formatting Pallet playing hide and seek

For some reason my formatting pallet has recently decided its location is beneath the bottom of my screen. When I click on the toolbar icon for the pallet I see it genie-swoosh to the bottom of the screen and then out of sight (or touch). Switching zooms and even switching between my laptop and an external monitor and playing with resolutions in systems preferences does nothing.
Any ideas anyone?

Thanks!

My thanks for your excellent article. The apple script worked like a charm.
Much appreciated.
