formatting problem after Tiger upgrade

I just upgrade to OS X 10.4.2 (from 10.2.7). A very simple spreadsheet
now has formatting problems. For example, a number that I had entered
in a cell as 1000 and had formatted to use the comma for thousand
seperator and 2 decimal points, so it would appear as 1,000.00, now
appears as 100000.

When I go to Format/Cells, it shows the correct formatting that I have
specified. And then when I exit out of that, I get an error message
saying: "Enter a different value. Your entry cannot be used. Try
entering an integer or decimel number."

In fact, now that I test it, I get this response when I try to format
any cell.

I have Microsoft Office X, version 10.0.0, which was working fine... is
there some upgrade that I should be doing?

Suggestions? Thanks.

First, XL takes its number formatting information from the System -
choose System Preferences/International, and make sure the number format
is the way you like it (you'll have to quit and restart XL for any
changes to take effect).

Second, yes, XL v.X version 10.0.0 is very much out of date. Check the
updates at Mactopia:

I'd recommend you use the 10.1.6 updater.
