Formatting problem in Word in Office XP

W

Wrekin

When I apply a format to a selected word, phrase, set of numbers, paragraph,
table cell, etc., in a Word document, e.g., bold, underline, left-align, the
formatting is applied to the entire document rather than just the selection.
If I use the Undo command sometimes only the selection remains reformatted
and sometimes the entire document return to the previous format. Can anyone
suggest what is causing this problem please.

I posted about this in another thread (see below for the URL). We are having
the same problem, and we are not using Auto Update in the Styles definitions.
(In the other thread, someone posted a pointer to a macro to run in the word
2007 doc to see if the styles in question use Auto Update. We ran that macro
and our styles are not defined to auto update.)

We are using Word 2007 and Word XP on XP, so we're using the Compatibility
Pack to go back/forth.

If I am using Word 2007, whenever I am in a Bulleted List and raise the
paragraph formatting window and then click the "Tabs..." key, it appears that
the rest of my document inherits the hanging indent defintions from the
Bulleted List Style. (Just clicking the "Tabs..." button causes that change
to "take" immediately. If I cancel out of that window, the formatting changes
that were applied bo my Body paragraphs do not revert.)

If I am using Word 2007 and am in a paragraph that uses, say, the Body Style
and if I open the Paragraph Formatting window and click the "Tabs..." button,
then the Bulleted List items inherit the paragraph settings from Body and
pick up an additional 6pts below each item. If i cancel out of that window,
the formatting changes do not revert. The unwanted formatting changes take
immediately, as soon as I click the "Tabs..." button in the paragraph
formatter.

These two Styles are not based on each other or on any other Style. They do
not use Auto Update, yet when I click "Tabs..." in one, the attributes in the
other Style change.

Does anyone have any information about this or suggestions?

At the back of my mind, IIRC, numbered list styles are one of the anomalies
because the style is stored in the local user's registry. I believe that
what you are seeing is the registry settings of the computer overriding the
numbered list style in the document.

What may work is if you open the document in Word 2007, open the Styles
Pane, click in the list style in the document and then right-click the style
in the Style Pane and select the 'Update to match selection option'. Save.

Forget that. Jay has the solution...

Hi Barbara,

You're hitting a bug in Word 2007 that affects the tab button in the
Paragraph dialog specifically. The workaround is to use other ways of
getting to the Tabs dialog. See Beth Melton's explanation in
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.word.docmanagement/msg/95da2913e112e10b

I hate to hear about bugs, but it makes me feel a little better knowing that
it's that and not some weird problem with our files or installation. :)
Thanks so much for the help!
