Formatting Problems in Word 2002

Help! A few months ago my copy of Word 2002 started
acting strangely re: formatting. Some examples:

1. Highlight the title of a short document, press Bold:
entire document goes bold. Press Undo (Ctrl-Z), and the
whole-document-bolding returns to normal, with only the
title bolded.

2. Type a title then a few blank lines. Start a list of
items. Select the first line in the list then press
Bullets. Entire document gets bulleted. Use Undo to fix
the rest of the document and get the desired result.

This behavior is making me crazy. I re-installed Office
XP, no effect. I uninstalled then re-installed Word; no
effect. I've tried turning OFF all the auto-formatting
features; no effect. Any ideas welcome!! Thanks, Jason
