Formatting problems - Word 2003

Rioliaden

I have built a template for a specific set of documents. After all of the
sections have been filled in, all tables have been completed, and all data is
done, I save the document. When I reopen the document, the formatting has
changed considerably: the Table of Contents is incorrect, the fonts have
changed, italics have been added where there were none, and outline numbering
is all beginning with 1.1 in all sections of the document. I desperately
need help with this problem so that I can finish my project.

I did a Detect and Repair this morning, which did not seem to help, and at
this point, I'm at a loss for any other solutions. Please help!

Do you have "Automatically update document styles" checked in Tools |
Templates and Add-ins?

No, I did not. Should I check that box?

I checked the box and the problem still exists. The TOC looks fine after I
hit Save, but upon reopening , it is totally out of whack. I don't
understand what is happening!

No, if that box were checked, that might be the source of the problem. Are
you perhaps opening in Reading Layout view?

Suzanne,

Thanks for the replies, but no, I do not have the box checked and neither do
I open in Reading Layout. I open in Print Layout. This appears to be a most
unusual problem, one that I have never encountered, and I cannot find a
solution. I do not have "Automatically Update" selected in Styles, which is
usually the source of formatting problems, so I really cannot think of what
could be causing this. Perhaps my template has become corrupted and I may
need to delete and recreate it. Any other suggestions would be greatly
appreciated!

I thought that a single document being corrupted might be the case, so I
created a second and third document using the template. The same mistakes
occured in each. I was trying to avoid destroying the contaminated template
because it is rather extensive, but I think it is the source of my woes. I
did not have Track Changes on.

Thanks again for your help and if you have time and another suggestion, I am
eager to hear it. I have other duties to accomplish this morning and will not
be deleting the template until later this afternoon, so if you have any
ideas, bring it on and thanks!
