Formatting problems

Hello -
When I open any document in word and try to change the
formatting of a single word, letter, setence, or anything,
the entire document is changed to the new format. As an
example, if I try to bold one word, the entire document is
bolded. This happens regardless of what I try to do -
alignment, bold, italics, you name it. What have I turned
on unknowingly?

From the format > style dialog, uncheck 'automatically update'.
