In Word 2000 with SP3 the application hangs and then closes when I try to to
format styles. Can anybody help me please.

Thanks for your quick response. With view hidden files on I searched for
normal.dot but could not find it. I then Repaired Office 2000 SR1 which
didn't work. I even reinstalled! I deleted the registry data key, restarted
but it didn't work. I even recreated normal.dot (using save as template) but
still: when I try to format / style, Word crashes. My c:\documents &
settings\applicationdata......\templates contains only normal.dot. Startup
folder on the same path is empty. I have sent the error report that it
creates a few times.

Reinstallation doesn't fix the user customisation. Normal.dot and the
registry entries are not changed.
Saving a document as normal.dot does not create normal.dot - only Word can
do that - so delete the one you created artifically (with Word closed). If
normal.dot is not being created, do you have the full version of Acrobat 7?
If so, see the last part of

If normal.dot is not being created by Word in the folder at tools > options
file locations > user templates, then something external to Word is
stopping it. Acrobat 7 is the usual suspect but there are others.

This could be a virus action, so check with an up to date virus checker, or
it could be attributable to some other add-in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm . The
Works add-in for Word is another that causes lots of grief. If you have that
one, uninstall it.

Does Word work normally if you start in in safe mode ie with from Windows
Start > Run with the command Winword /a.? If it does, then the problem is
certainly an external one.

Word formats to the printer driver. I corrupt printer driver can cause
spurious problems. Update and/or reinstall the printer driver.

If that doesn't fix it, I am struggling ;)

I had to do it the hard way! I uninstalled MS Office and manually cleaned off
my disk and registry then reloaded it and voila! everything is back to
normal. For the sake of educating us all, I backtracked a couple of months to
see what I had loaded that could interfere with Word formatting and style
sheets. I found the following: I was looking for a way to type phonetic
symbols directly into a doc without cutting/pasting symbols. I found the SIL
IPA93 phonetic fonts which I copied into windows/fonts. I'm not saying its
just their little programme that messed things up as shortly after that I
loaded an utility/programme for Office that gives you the ability to type
other foreign texts eg Chinese and Arabic as well as right to left lines but
I can't remember what it was or where I got it from. I think its a
combination of the two and my own finger trouble in the process of getting
everything to work that corrupted my normal.dot. Well that's it then -
another lesson learnt! Thank you Microsoft and a double thank you to you
Graham! Have a year full of normal.dots 'n dollars.

Just for the record, the contributors in this forum do not work for
