Formatting symbols started appearing in new message text

When we start a new message, a number of formatting symbols are added as we
type. The text starts with the "Normal" format symbol which cannot be deleted
and every time you create a space, a dot is added to the text. When you send
the message, all of these disappear. If you reply to a message, the
formatting symbols are put into the original message as well but again, do
not show in the 'Sent' message. I have tried to change the 'format' but
nothing seems to override this!
Any hints about this welcome.

Click the Pilchrow mark (¶) on the Toolbar of Word to turn the formatting
marks off or click Tools>Options and on the View tab, uncheck the formatting
marks you don't want to see.

If you do not see the [¶] button, you can also use Ctrl+Shift+8.
