Formatting Table of Contents

Mike Reshetar

Using Word in Office 2003.

I would like to format the table of contents of a document so that if a line
runs long, into the area where that page number shows, it would
automatically start the next line leaving the area for the page number
blank.

Is this possible?

Thank you.

I checked a doct of mine with a TOC and the line that needs to wrap does so
just fine with the page number appearing in the second line of the TOC
entry.

I did not see any setting in any of the places I looked (that would permit
formatting customization) that made that happen. It seems like the default
result to me.

One can adjust the point at which the second line indents.

Try artificially lengthening the text for that entry to make good and sure
the line will wrap. Does the page number appear then?

Richard,

I have the second line indented with no problem.

What I am after is having the first line start the wrap just prior to where
the page number should be instead of continuing out into the area where the
page number would be.

Am I trying to do something that is impossible?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Dear Mike,

I achieve the impossible apparently.

I edit the style for TOC3 (alt-shift-S) so that the right margin was
indented 3/10" then set a tab with a leader to 6.5". Your margins may be
different so the latter number would differ.
