Is there a way to change which header levels go into the table of contents at the different TOC levels? There used to be in word 2003 but not anymore?

When you insert a table of contents (Insert>Index and Tables, Table of
Contents), you will need to click on the Options button in order to specify
the hierarchy according to which styles are organised in the table.

Thanks for the response.

I may be missing it, but it seems that Word X for mac has you go to insert>document elements>table of contents and then opens up a drop down menu where the only options are the built in ones using preset header levels or manually typing the entire table. I'd really like to use Header 6 as TOC 1 and then Header 1 as TOC 2 and so on, so I can format and update different sections of the TOC more easily like I used to do in Word 2003 on my PC.

Thanks

Hi Lisa -

I think the first thing you're "missing" is that you *aren't* using Word X
(version 10.x)- that's the version that preceded 2004 (version 11.x). It
sounds more like you are currently using 2008 (version 12.x). What you
describe is true if you want to use the predefined TOC choices offered as
Document Elements.

However, if you follow Michel's suggestion accurately you will find the
dialog where you can make the specifications you want to make.

Awesome! That totally answered my question. Sorry I didn;t take the time to fully comprehend Michel's response.

If I may ask another question...

I need to format one of the TOC headings to have roman numerals before it. While I'm able to do so, once the list is numbered the pace number moves to right next to the section titles of the numbered sections and the ......... that connects it disappears. Any idea what I'm missing?

Thanks again!

I suspect it has something to do with the tabs, but I can't quite
picture it. How did you add the roman numerals, and if you put in a tab
between the numerals and the heading, try removing it.

I figured it out by studying the formatting between the two parts of the TOC. I found that adding the roman numerals made the tab that was there disappear and then I had to simply replace it. Thanks again for the responses. Regards, Lisa
