Formatting text box crashes Word 2000

Whenever I try to format a text box in Word 2000 (9.0.8944 SP-3), Word will
stop responding or immediately close w/o saving. I recently downloaded
updates for Office which included Word updates. The installation of the Word
updates got
interupted several times. Could Word be corrupted? Any suggestions?
