Formatting the Paragraph Mark

Has anyone found a use for applying character formatting to the
paragraph mark other than Hidden Text?

For an unusual but useless effect, select just the paragraph mark of a
long paragraph, apply light blue shading (to text, not paragraph),
then use Format | Font to apply 200% scaling, a large font size, and
marching red ants effect. The results are not exactly what you might
expect.

it's a "non-printing" character, so most any formatting (like size,
font, etc.) you'd apply to it only can't make much sense in the first
place :)

Hi Bob,

One (mis-)use is to format numbers and bullets: They'll pick up the
formatting of the paragraph mark.

So if you have an auto-numbered paragraph, you can make the number red by
formatting the paragraph red.

But on the whole, I would have preferred it if the paragraph couldn't be
formatted at all.

Bob's right, of course. However, I have found it useful
when troubleshooting a document someone else has been
revising to highlight just the paragraph mark and apply
or un-apply some formatting. For instance, a user will
say to me "For some reason, my paragraph number is bolded
on just this one paragraph and I don't want it to be."
Since the paragraph mark at the end of each paragraph
contains the formatting for that paragraph, we can get
the unwanted bold formatting to disappear simply by
highlighting the appropriate paragraph mark and un-
bolding it.
