'formatting' toolbar buttons are greyed out

when sending messages, the font editing, text alignment and font color
buttons in the formatting" toolbar are greyed out and can't be used. When I
reply to an email they are ok to use.

Then you are probably composing in Plain Text. Change your format to HTML
instead.
