formatting toolbar gone!!

Somehow or another my formatting toolbar has disappeared. I am able to
use these functions through the "formatting palette" (through the
"view" menu) but it's really annoying because it covers up text, etc.
Anyone know how to get that back? I can't find it in the help topics.
Furthermore, I can't get to ANY of my toolbars through the "View" menu
because "Toolbars" is grayed out. Any suggestions???
Thanks!
Dierdre

Hi Dierdre,

Go to Tools> Customize> Toolbars. Select the Menu Bar in the toolbars list
and click the Reset button. Does that bring back the View menu and the
Formatting Toolbar?

If not, try renaming your Normal template. Since you didn't say what
version of Word you're using, I can't give you the precise instructions, but
you'll find them here: <http://word.mvps.org/Mac/MacWordNormal.html>

Beth,
Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, your suggestions didn't
work. I'm using an eMac that has Word X on it (I'm a teacher and they
let me take my computer home for the summer). My Word toolbars have
been missing for probably 6 or 8 months, so needless to say, it's been
restarted numerous times. I tried going to Tools>Customize>Toolbars,
but "Customize" was also grayed out. (It sounds like it would work if I
could get to it!) I renamed the Normal template but once I was in the
organizer, everything was grayed out in the toolbar tab. I think some
little wizard got into my computer and ate all the toolbars :) Any
other suggestions?
Thanks,
Dierdre

Hi Dierdre,

If you had a document open (as John noted) and the Customize> Toolbars
option was *still* grayed out, then I think you'd better do a *proper*
removal and reinstallation of Office X. You can try other common
troubleshooting procedures first, if you like
(<http://word.mvps.org/mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html>). Testing/trashing
your preferences may get you somewhere, for instance, but I doubt it.

You'll find the procedure for removal/reinstallation here:
<http://word.mvps.org/Mac/RemoveReinstall.html>
