Formatting toolbar has dissappeared

Hello,

Recently, my formatting toolbar dissappeared, even when it was checked
under the View > Toolbars menu. I've tried reinstalling the program
twice. The first time, the toolbar reappeared for a few days before
dissappearing again, and the second time I reinstalled, it did not
reappear.

I'm also getting a message when I launch Word: "An unexpected error
occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework Library." I
should also note that I experienced problems with Powerpoint and Excel
freezing around the same time as I originally lost the toolbar. Since
the reinstalls, these programs have worked fine.

Since the formatting toolbar is very useful, I'd really appreciate you
help.

Best, Justin

By the way, I'm using a MacBook Pro, OS 10.4.10, with Office 2004,
Word Version 11.3.5.

Hi Justin -

First things first :)

You've wasted some time & caused an additional problem by reinstalling.
Doing so without doing a proper Removal accomplishes absolutely nothing &
even if the removal is done the problem can most frequently be resolved
without doing so. The *program* files are rarely the problem - it is other
supporting files that can get flaky & those are what need be addressed.
Also, you've reinstalled to the earlier version (which is what is on the
installation disk) and your support files are still set at your most recent
update level - that's what the Framework error is telling you and that's
what to handle first.

Launch one of the Office Apps, go to the Help menu & run Check for Updates.
You'll most likely find that 11.3.5, 11.3.6 & 11.3.7 will be downloaded.
Once the updating is complete run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions
just to be on the safe side.

Next: Do you actually mean the Formatting *Toolbar* or do you mean the
Formatting *Palette*? If it's the Palette follow the guidelines at:

http://mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/office/formattingpalettegone.html

If it really is the Toolbar the first thing to try is to click the little
black triangle at the right end of any toolbar, select Customize
Toolbars/Menus and click the Toolbars tab. On that page make sure there is a
check in the box adjacent to the listing for Formatting, click on the word
"Formatting", then click the Reset button. If that doesn't cause it to
appear try restarting Word.

If it still doesn't show up - or if it disappears again - it suggests a
corrupt .plist file, which you'll find here:

~:Library:preferences:Microsoft:com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist

Make sure none of the Office apps are running, drag that file to the
desktop, then restart Word. It will generate a new .plist file for you &
that should resolve the matter. You can then delete the old file. Should
there be any further problem follow the troubleshooting steps here:

Thanks Bob,

I was running the most recent version of Word already and had
uninstalled the program before reinstalling. This was for the
Formatting Toolbar, not the Palette. I went through you suggestions
and finally the removing the .plist file worked. Thank you for your
time.
