Formatting with Mind-of-its-own

Hi, not sure how to control this issue but every time I
try and format a single word, line, or cell in a table,
the entire document formatting is changed as well--
automatically leading to rework. This is very frustrating
and is a problem I have only experienced with the
Professional version of MS Word 2002 (using Windows XP,
Professional).

Can someone please tell me how to turn this dumb, smart
thing off?
