I was working in Word 2000 and accidentally turned on a
feature that automatically inserts editing marks (e.g.
inserts a "dot" everytime the space bar is depressed;
inserts the "backwards P" sign everytime a new paragraph
is started; inserts an "arrow" every time the tab button
is depressed). How do I turn this off???

By re-applying the same 'accidental' keystroke combination - CTRL+SHIFT+8 or
click the ¶ toolbar button.

Click Tools | Options | View | and clear the paragraph
marks and spaces boxes.

Also, avoid clicking the paragraph button on the toolbar.
You can click it there to turn ON or OFF the marks.
