Formatting

Why is formatting, like date or currency, not retained from one session to another? I have to re-format cells each time I open a spreadsheet.

Hmm... I can't reproduce this generally.

What version of XL?

Does this happen with all workbooks ore only one (or some)?

Are you using the built in styles, or have you modified them?

I'm having a similar problem. I select a column, set the formatting, save and close. Reopen the file and the formatting is saved for any data already in the sheet, but all empty cells seem to be revert to the General format. Definitely didn't observe this behavior in 2004 and earlier. Happens with both XLS and XLSX formats.

No, I am using format>cells after highlighting a column. It happens in all instances. Formatting of cells with contents is retained, but all formatting of empty cells reverts to the "general" category with each new session.

I am using Excel 2008, and never had this problem with 2004. When I highlight a column and then try to format empty cells in that column, whether with date or currency, it works for that time, but the empty cells do not retain the applied formatting when I close the program and start over.
