Formatting

Hi,
I tried to change the colour of the tasks on my MS project but I am
receiving this messege, "remove your direct formatting from one or more
formatted cells in this view. you can only directly format up to 64000 cells.
you exceeded more than 64000."
So now what should I do to solve this problem?

Henry,
I sounds like you went overboard in color-coding your schedule or your
schedule has been edited out the kazoo. Users sometimes make the mistake
of going to Format/Font each time they want to color code something.
Over time these changes mount up. Below I've listed some suggestions to
avoid this problem in the future. Meanwhile, you're kinda stuck, you
will probably have to reset your file to clear all the individual custom
font formatting. One method to reset is method 4 under FAQ 43 - Handling
project file corruption and/or bloat, found on our MVP website at,
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm. The other methods listed in the
FAQ may work as well.

Note that simply going to Format/Font and changing back to black will
NOT reset the custom formatting - the object will still be individually
set.

1. Do not go nuts with color coding a schedule. Project is not an
artist's application, it's a schedule application for Pete's sake.
2. If you really must color code, first try using Format/Text Styles so
that common groups of tasks/objects are font formatted as a single
entity.
3. If you have multiple independent properties (e.g. task name, start,
finish, etc.) that have like formatting, use a multiple non-contiguous
select before going to Format/Font. That can treat up to 10 objects as
one item.

Appreciate the advice. I'm managing a 6,000+ line schedule that has 6 outline levels, and wanted to colorcode rows by the outline level. Each outline level covered a specific scope of the overall project, and it really helped visually to see all the divisions in a certain color, the groups in another color, etc. But, I couldn't figure out a way to automatically format by outline level, so had to manually add the colors to each outline level. Two questions:

* Is there a way in Project 2012 to specify format by outline level? Just specifying a color background would be great.

* I'm having trouble implementing Method 4 to remove bloat. The error message of course says to "remove the direct formatting from one or more formatted cells". How do you remove the direct formatting? It appears if I make any adjustments to formatting (e.g., setting the rows back to no color), it doesn't help, and still considers the revision as manual formatting.

Thanks so much in advance.
