Formfields vs. Userform Controls embedded in document?

What are the relative advantages and disadvantages of embedding
MS-Word Formfields into the document or 'regular' MS-Forms controls?

I had successfully used Radiobuttons in a Word document, even tried
a DateTimePicker 8didn'tr look nice on printed paper...), which are
Userform controls, and now -- thru the hint by Doug Robbins to the
"Fill out that form" articles by Dian D. Chapman -- learned of the
Formfield objects. I just note that -- at least in Office 2000 --
there are no Radiobuttons available as Formfields.

What do the experts and lay people here prefer, what do they
recommend? For which reasons?

Both forms that use formfields in a protected document and UserForms have
there purposes and there are many occasions where one is better than the
other.

For simple forms that are distributed to users for them to complete with
information and return, formfields in a protected document can be entirely
suitable. They do have their limits however and there is a vast amount more
that can be done with UserForms.
