Forms Problem

I have created a fairly simple form with check boxes and text fields, and
have applied the Protect Document security - to Fill out forms only.
Unfortunately, when I save the document, close and then reopen, neither
myself or my users can check boxes or enter text in the fields.

I have to Unprotect the Document to access it, and upon doing this the
document appears in design mode. I then have to Exit design mode and reapply
protect document to Fill Out Forms only.

At this stage the document is where I want it to be - ready for users to
complete the form without editing the content - so I save and close the
document, but when I reopen the cycle starts again.

Can someone please help me to understand what I might be overlooking.

It seems as if you have been adding not only form fields but also ActiveX
controls to the document. The latter will force the document into Design
mode as a result of macro security settings. You may want to make sure that
you are just using "ordinary" form fields; then you should be able to turn
off Design mode once and for all. If you want more specific instructions,
tell me your version of Word.
