Formula Bar

Okay I installed the new update to Office 2008 12.1.1. and I'm suppose to be able to move and anchor the formula bar, how? Mines is stuck to the top of the screen and I can't move it.

That's where it "sticks". You can make it float by dragging the grey area
just below the little red dot on the left side.

Hi Kevin -

Are you using the "gripper" at the left end of the bar (it looks like a
rectangle the height of the bar with a little round button inside its top
end)? That's the only place you can grab hold of it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "anchor", but if you mean within the workbook
window the answer is No. Within the workspace it can only float - Only the
Standard & Formatting toolbars can be docked within the top of the workbook
window. The Formula Bar can be docked just below the Menu Bar (above the
workbook) or at the bottom of the screen (below the workbook).

I'm using Excel now for a really long time (MAC & PCs) and the new floating
formula bar is just a nuisance - what do I need it on top of my page or
having it floating around on my sheet? Either it is too far away to edit
formulas quickly, or it is above some important stuff.

Who the hack came up with this stupid idea? Why can't it just sit between
the page and the buttons as it always did? It was really right where it was.

Eventually I think everybody at MS gone nuts! I really haven't seen any
usefull new feature in any MS-product for years that makes life easier!

Maybe there aren't so many people left, using MS-products on a rather
professional basis, who value efficiency over those stupid helpers
(=help(don't know how to calculate;if did;professional;need helper).

Can't say I'm crazy about it either, but going on about it here really won't
do any good at all If you want to register your opinions & comments where
they may have some impact, use Help> Send Feedback.

Thanks for the advice, sorry I guess was not very intuitive with where to grab it. Then again it's not very obvious at least to me.

And I couldn't agree more that having it "floating" makes no sense to me, but then again for those that like it it probably should have been an option in preferences to either anchor it or float.

You don't need an option in preferences. It is either anchored or floating
depending on where you put it.

I'm experiencing the frustration. Can I assume from this thread that there isn't a way to anchor the formula bar up above in one of the tool bars?

Hi Scott -

Straight answer: The Formula Bar cannot be docked anywhere within the
workbook window in Excel 2008. It can only be docked immediately below the
Menu Bar, between that and the top edge of the window. [FWIW, I often use it
to cover up the Element Gallery button bar - that works out OK as long as
you don't move windows around much

If you find it as objectionable as most people do, use Help> Send Feedback
to help raise the consciousness level of those who may be able to implement
a change somewhere down the road.
