Formula bar?

S

Sandy Foster

In Excel 2004, I can see the formula bar at the top of the worksheet.
This is very handy when trying to read what's in a cell when the font is
quite small or when I'm trying to figure out what my mistake might be.

In Excel 2008, I can't find the formula bar to save my life. I have it
checked in the View menu, and I thought that would allow me to see it,
but I can't. I'm feeling rather blind at the moment -- what am I
missing?

Thanks! :)

It may simply be that you're looking in the wrong place :) You're not
expecting to find it in the workbook window, are you?

Some wise, experienced veteran user on the development team for Excel 2008
decided to exercise proper priorities & allow the Formatting Palette &
Elements Gallery [since they provide all the *important* stuff] to be
Dockable in the workbook window and relegate the insidious, imposing,
insignificant Formula Bar [who uses formulas in Excel???] to a permanently
floating oblivion. Anyway... Look at the *top* of the screen above the
workbook window - you should find it just beneath the Menu Bar, although it
can sometimes get wedged up behind the Menu Bar as well... Or possibly
floating around somewhere that you'd least expect to find it.

If you still can't locate it post back for other possibilities.

I have to admit that the workbook window was *exactly* where I was
expecting to find it. said:

Thanks so much, Bob! I never thought to look there, but I've finally
found it hiding beneath my workbook window, directly below the menu bar,
just as you said. :) I thought I was going crazy there for a while;
you've reassured me as to the state of my mind -- at least for the
moment. ;)

Thanks again!

Ah, sweet sanity is a transient condition at best... But highly overrated.
How would we be able to cope with all those who are truly loony if we were
actually sane?

Glad I could help... And I'll again be beating on them next week to restore
it to its rightful position. Perhaps in the next major release?
