I'm trying to write a formula that matches a value in cloumn A of sheet 1
with column a sheet 2 and return the value of column D of sheet 2 in sheet 1
when coulmn a in both sheets match. If they don't match I want a n/a to
return.

=INDEX(Sheet2!D,MATCH(Sheet1!A1,Sheet2!A:A,0))

And if you want to return neat looking blanks: ""
instead of ugly #N/As for unmatched cases

In Sheet1,
Place in say, B2:
=IF(ISNA(MATCH(A2,Sheet2!A:A,0)),"",INDEX(Sheet2!D,MATCH(A2,Sheet2!A:A,0)))
Copy B2 down as far as required
