Formula for VAT

Hello,

I'm using excel to do accountancy where I enter each receipt's details. This includes the VAT totals. I have entered a formula which when I enter the total, the spreadsheet automatically calculates and enters the VAT paid and the net total (excluding the VAT). Its a real time saver!

My question is; is there a way I can copy the formula into the other cells where it will change the row number correspondingly. i.e. at the moment my formula for row 1 is D1*0.8695652, but if I copy that into the other rows of column D, the formula will have the wrong row number. Is there a way I can get it to change automatically, without me having to go through each row individually to correct the formula Does that make sense?

Thanks!

I think you need to look in Help and learn about absolute and relative
references. Your formula should probably read $D$1...

Well -- no offense -- but, No, I'm afraid it doesn't make sense. You give no
clear indication of what cell your formula is in, what you mean by "wrong
row number", what your actual objective is or what is happening contrary to
your expectations.

It's pointless to have a formula in cell D1 which reads as =D1*0.8695652
because that's a circular reference - a formula can't contain a reference to
the cell it's in. Additionally, the default behavior in Excel is for the
cell references in a formula to update relative to where the formula is
copied to.

I'm sorry, but I'm at a complete loss to understand what you're trying to do
or what the problem may be.
