Naomi,

Hank Scorpio and I had an exchange recently on a similar topic. I was
getting formula auto extending, and he wasn't. There is an option in
Tools>Options Edit tab to set this facility, but as Hank says in the snippet
below, it can be particular about when it works,

The option doesn't exist in Excel 97; it looks like it was a new
addition in 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;231002

I also have the checkbox checked in XP (like you, I've never touched
it before), but what I did find is that it tends to be very particular
about the circumstances under which it operates. If I follow the
example in KBA 231002 to the letter, it will work. Make a slight
change (like having a rand() formula generate some of the values in
columns A or B, or leaving column A empty), and it won't.

Does this cover your situation?

Hi Naomi!

"not to forget Mr Harker"

We try to keep it friendly and non-confrontational here. There's
plenty of other newsgroups around if you want to get insulted and
flamed.

But thanks is always welcomed and you'll find over time that you'll
learn a lot by only watching and participating where you can share
your knowledge of how to use Excel for whatever you do with it.
