formula returning a "0"

I'm getting a "0" (zero) as the result of a simple sum formula, when the
sum should really be 256. This has happened to me before, and I fixed
it, but I can't remember what I did. Something was turned on that
shouldn't have been, but I cannot locate it. Actually last time,
instead of getting the result, I would get the formula. This time, I'm
getting a zero. I've checked all the formatting and can't find what's
wrong.

Most likely your "numbers" are text, copy an empty cell, select the range
and do edit>paste special and select add
