formula showing in cell

I have recieved a report and am creating my outputs.
However when I type in my formulas ie: =index(blah blah
blah) the formula stays in the cell. Its not the shift ~
Any Ideas?

Is the cell formatted as text? If so, anything you enter will be treated as
text, so you will not be able to enter a formula.
Format the cell as General and THEN try typing in the formula.

I must say I feel like a complete moron. I guess somtimes
the obvious details are overlooked!
