hi is ther anywhere that I find out what each symbol in excel 2000 means
ie %, ! etc

When ther in the formular bar, I just want to learn how to write
formulars that work

Can you give us an example of such a formula? The exclamation point symbol,
!, is used to signify that the preceding is a sheet name. For instance, say
you want to reference a cell address, say A1. If the A1 you mean is on the
same sheet as the formula then you can say A1. But if the A1 is on another
sheet, say "MySheet", you would say MySheet!A1. If the sheet name has
spaces in it, like My Sheet, then you would say 'My Sheet'!A1. HTH Otto

have you read the help file recently? Type in "operators" as a keyword.

would be well advised to fall back on that old technology call a book!
