formulas Don't Work

I am just learning how to set up spreadsheets. I click on
format cell and try phone number, zip code and some
custom formulas. When I type in a number to the zip code
formulated box, it starts the zip with 00 then uses the
first three numbers in the zip code as the last three so
28281 becomes 00281. A cell formatted for a phone number
and I ender 2025552322 becomes (2) 025-5523. And so on .
I've cleared the cell, cleared the format, tried new
worksheets.

Some of my cell format items work, but most don't. I've
downloaded all the downloads I can find.

Any solutions?

Gainor,

This is just a guess, Click on Start and select Settings|Control
Panel|Regional Settings and make sure you have selected U.S. (Assuming that
is the country you are in.)

Try highlighting the column that you are having problems
with. Go to the "Format" tab on the tool bar. Select
the "General" line on the list of format options. Then the
information you type in should appear as you wish. It
sounds to me like the cells have a mathmatical type of
format. I think you want a text format.
