Formulas in Project Server 2007

H

Hasaj Patrik

I have problems with definition of formulas in enteprise global tempate
and/or project server as enterprise custom fields.

New version moved it from the enteprise global template (based on Project
Professional) to project server directly.

formulas that are runningand running in project professional, do not run in
project server as enterprise custom field. is there any help, documentation,
hints, tips, whatever, what describe how to do it ?

used steps: i have define custom filed with formulas in project
professional in enteprise global template in open Project professional. then
in the customizing dialog I pushed the button Add to the enterprise (the
name is maybe different, but the sense is clear), and the field occured in
the project server as enterprise field. but after opening new project the
formulas does not work.

whatsover, referenced fields using brackets and names where automaticly
translated into codes, what is not readable, updatable and manageble. it
seems to be not usable.

thanx for any help

I personally like to use the technique you are using to create formulas,
which is to create the formula in Project Professional 2007 and then add it
to Project Server using the Add to Enterprise button. I have found several
things using this technique. First, you need to go back to the PWA
interface and rename the field, as it appends field name information after
the name you give it. Second, if you create a custom enterprise field AFTER
you already have projects in the Project Server database, you need to open
each of those projects and press the F9 function key to recalculate the
project and any new enterprise formulas. After doing this, it should
eliminate any errors you see, and then you can save and publish the project.

If you continue to have problems, you will need to tell us the exact formula
you created and the type of field in which you created it. If you added
graphical indicators to the field, as well, you will need to tell us your
exact graphical indicator criteria. Hope this helps.

Dale,

I did following steps.

started MSP2007 professional + Gannt View
customized field Task.Flag 1
- defined formulas iif( [Name] = "xxx"; True;False)
- defined graphical indicators
customized view Gannt view
- added into view a checked displaying
everything was OK

again i customized field = Add Field to Enteprise
the field occured in the PWA

i started PWA, server setting, enetrise custom fields

click added field to rename it

during opening page with ent. field definition the PWA started to MSP2007 to
validate formula

validation failed - PWA said that thare is an error in formula or referenced
unknown field
in pwa formula seems following: iff( [MSPJ188743694];True;False)

it was unable to save because the error.

thanks for any help

I have personally seen this error before, and have no idea what is the cause
of it. If you exit Project Professional 2007, exit PWA and then navigate
back to PWA, can you edit the formula now? When you edit a formula in PWA,
the system launches Project Professional 2007 to validate the formula, if
you do not have Project Professional 2007 open. One time when I received
that error, I exited the page where I was attempting to edit the field, and
then tried again and the error disappeared. The best I can tell you is
these kinds of problems represent the continuing issues that users are
experiencing with Project Server 2007. It has many great new features,
which make it very powerful to use, but its many bugs make it CHALLENGING to
use in a real production environment. Let us know what you find using the
technique I reference above.

Yes, this is an error I have seen before as well that is caused when you
create a formula with field references and do not exit out of project
professional after it has opened to validate the formula. It no longer
resolves the field names and instead displays those cryptic values (i.e.
[MSPJ188743694])

If you can no longer save this field even after closing both project and
pwa, I would suggest not using the feature to convert a field to enterprise
and instead

1) Take down a copy of the formula from your custom text field in Project
Pro
2) Delete the field you created that is not working.
3) Manually create a field in PWA>Enterprise Custom Fields and specify the
formula there.

Hi Dale, about you've said "but its many bugs make it CHALLENGING to
use in a real production environment."
If there are so many bugs (Global bugs, field bugs, environment bugs and
others), why are they selling Project Server 2007 as a solution ?

I know that the new features are very welcome. But it has so many bugs.

I work with Project Server since 2002 version, but 2007 is the buggest one.

By the way, I will not give up.

publish the project.

If you continue to have problems, you will need to tell us the exact
formula you created and the type of field in which you created it. If
you added graphical indicators to the field, as well, you will need to
tell us your exact graphical indicator criteria. Hope this helps.

I have problems with definition of formulas in enteprise global tempate
and/or project server as enterprise custom fields.

New version moved it from the enteprise global template (based on
Project Professional) to project server directly.

formulas that are runningand running in project professional, do not run
in project server as enterprise custom field. is there any help,
documentation, hints, tips, whatever, what describe how to do it ?

used steps: i have define custom filed with formulas in project
professional in enteprise global template in open Project professional.
then in the customizing dialog I pushed the button Add to the enterprise
(the name is maybe different, but the sense is clear), and the field
occured in the project server as enterprise field. but after opening new
project the formulas does not work.

whatsover, referenced fields using brackets and names where automaticly
translated into codes, what is not readable, updatable and manageble. it
seems to be not usable.

thanx for any help

Don't ask me. I don't work for Microsoft so I don't know. All I know is
this: trying to teach people how to use Project Server 2007 is becoming a
very unpleasant experience due to so many bugs, issues, and limitations in
the software. :( Hope this helps.

I work with Project Server since 2002 version, but 2007 is the buggest
one.

By the way, I will not give up.

I have personally seen this error before, and have no idea what is the
cause
of it. If you exit Project Professional 2007, exit PWA and then navigate
back to PWA, can you edit the formula now? When you edit a formula in
PWA,
the system launches Project Professional 2007 to validate the formula, if
you do not have Project Professional 2007 open. One time when I received
that error, I exited the page where I was attempting to edit the field,
and
then tried again and the error disappeared. The best I can tell you is
these kinds of problems represent the continuing issues that users are
experiencing with Project Server 2007. It has many great new features,
which make it very powerful to use, but its many bugs make it CHALLENGING
to
use in a real production environment. Let us know what you find using
the
technique I reference above.

Dale,

I did following steps.

started MSP2007 professional + Gannt View
customized field Task.Flag 1
- defined formulas iif( [Name] = "xxx"; True;False)
- defined graphical indicators
customized view Gannt view
- added into view a checked displaying
everything was OK

again i customized field = Add Field to Enteprise
the field occured in the PWA

i started PWA, server setting, enetrise custom fields

click added field to rename it

during opening page with ent. field definition the PWA started to
MSP2007
to validate formula

validation failed - PWA said that thare is an error in formula or
referenced unknown field
in pwa formula seems following: iff( [MSPJ188743694];True;False)

it was unable to save because the error.

thanks for any help

I personally like to use the technique you are using to create
formulas,
which is to create the formula in Project Professional 2007 and then
add
it to Project Server using the Add to Enterprise button. I have found
several things using this technique. First, you need to go back to
the
PWA interface and rename the field, as it appends field name
information
after the name you give it. Second, if you create a custom enterprise
field AFTER you already have projects in the Project Server database,
you
need to open each of those projects and press the F9 function key to
recalculate the project and any new enterprise formulas. After doing
this, it should eliminate any errors you see, and then you can save
and
publish the project.

If you continue to have problems, you will need to tell us the exact
formula you created and the type of field in which you created it. If
you added graphical indicators to the field, as well, you will need to
tell us your exact graphical indicator criteria. Hope this helps.

Come on guys, SP1 is right around the corner. Also, many of the issues are
already fixed in hotfix releases available now. Claudio, if you are in
produciton, you should try to obtain hotfix 941426, which I think is the
latest. There may be a newer one, so ask if there is.
