Forumales with defined names

Cell A1 contains the text of the named range, "Sales". Cells A2 through A10
are named "Sales".

On A12, if I enter "=sum(sales)" I get the sum of cells A2 though A10. Okay
so far.

Instead, I'd lilke to enter a cell reference containing the name of the
range such as, "=sum(A1)". If I do this, the result is the text, "sales"
instead of the sume of A2 through A10.

How can I make this work?
