forwarding attachments

On several occassions, I will get an email (Outlook 2002) with an attachment.
I will click 'Forward', delete the text in the message (but retain the
attachment) and insert my own text. Then when I try to send the email gets
hung up (hour glass). I have to exit out of Outlook and start again. How
do I prevent this - it happens relatively frequent, but not all the time.
The attachments are also not very large (< 100Kb).

Is there any pattern to which ones have a problem? Such as they are ones you sent quickly, before autosave kicked in?

See if it helps to click Save before sending.

Not likely. I am a very slow typer and was adding my own message before
sending.
