I just wanted to share this, in case anyone else has the experience I
had of losing a very important document just before a deadline (which
shouldn't happen as we should all be sensible enough to save backup
copies, but does happen often, as we're only human..!!), because Word
corrupted it. The message it gave was 'document name or path not valid'
and then said something about permissions...
The document wouldn't open whatever we did - we tried opening it on
different computers, opening it in rich text format, with other
software besides Word - among other things advised by helpful people in
Google groups (my usual fount of knowledge). Then when I got to the
stage of desparation and trying absolutely anything, I opened InDesign
- I'm a graphic designer so have Adobe software, the Creative Suite to
be precise, and created a new document, then went to File, Place and
then navigated to where I had the corrupt file saved and chose to place
the text from it into my InDesign doc. To my amazement, all the content
appeared, formatting and all!!! Thank you Adobe.
So if you have a corrupt Word file and are desperate, then try to find
someone who has Adobe software - or go to a professional designer,
even! and they may be able to help you by doing this.
i hope that by telling about my experience I may help some other poor
soul out there who's having a similar experience to mine!! But as I
have no idea why this happened, no guarantees I'm afraid.
all the best
