four greyed out paragraph markers above footnotes

Below the footnote line, and above the footnotes themselves are four
greyed-out paragraph markers, which I cannot highlight or access in any other
way. Does anyone have a suggestion about how to get rid of them?

Hi, cliff. I think you need to edit the footnote separator as follows:
1. Switch to normal view.
2. On the View menu, click Footnotes. If your document contains both
footnotes and endnotes, a message appears. Click View footnote area or View
endnote area, and then click OK.
3. In the Footnote dropdown box (where it says "All footnotes"), choose
"Footnote separator". Delete the blank paragraphs.
