Hi,
I'm trying again to find an answser.
I can't access my local website with FP2003. Trying to open a site gives
access denied, and trying to create a new one gives "sharepoint services are
not installed."
I have xp pro and iis 5.0 with serverextentions 2002 installed.
When i try to open the website from the iis manager it says i need to
install the frontpage client???
Trying to create a se based web takes me to a page not found error... Also
the index and search of the helpfile doesn't work.. (i did activate index in
the computer management mmc)
And .. of course i tried to uninstall and reinstall etc.. This is very
tiring software...
Can anybody help??

When you install IIS 5.1, it create the default web and sets up the extensions. In FP go to File
Menu | Open Site and enter http://localhost

Once localhost is open, create a folder, then select and right click on the folder, select convert
to subweb / site, then double click the new subsite name (with a globe on it) to open the subsite
(http://localhost/subsitename.

Now you can start building your web site.

Thanks Thomas
But that's exactly what doesn't work! I can't open local host or create a
new site and use a path with local host..
I can only use the open the files using the physical path and then in the
browser it works fine. But i want to open my website..
If i create a serverextension web in iis manager (not 2002 because that
doesn't work either, i get a page not found when i try that), then i still
can't acces in FP....

Beats me..

Uninstall IIS and any anti-virus application, reboot, install IIS and the FP extensions, then try
access http://localhost from your browser, then with FP.

Well, I have good news for you. The software is not tiring. But learning how
to develop web sites can be, just as learning anything else can be.
I can't access my local website with FP2003. Trying to open a site gives
access denied, and trying to create a new one gives "sharepoint services
are not installed."

Try not creating a SharePoint web.
I have xp pro and iis 5.0 with serverextentions 2002 installed.
When i try to open the website from the iis manager it says i need to
install the frontpage client???

I have no idea what you're trying to do, but it isn't what you need to do.
First, I'm not at all sure what "the web site" is that you're trying to
open. From what I've read, you haven't created any yet. IIS does come with a
default web site, but unless you know what you're doing, you should stay out
of the IIS manager. Use FrontPage to open a web site. If you want to open
the default web site with FrontPage, you can simply open FrontPage, go to
File|Open Web... and type in the URL of your local IIS default web site.
This would be either "ttp://localhost"or "htp://machineName" if you don't
have a HOSTS file or a HOSTS>SAM file that specifies "localhost" as the name
of your local server. You can also use "http://127.0.0.1" which is the local
loopback IP address.
Trying to create a se based web takes me to a page not found error... Also
the index and search of the helpfile doesn't work.. (i did activate index
in the computer management mmc)

This doesn't make much sense. You say you're "trying to create" a web, but
(I have to guess) IE is giving you a "Page not found" error. Why doesn't
this make sense? Because you don't use IE to create a web page; you use
FrontPage. As for "i did activate index in the computer management mmc," you
have lost me again. But whatever you did was not necessary or desirable.

Tip: Guesswork is likely to cause you MORE work. Your guesses may contribute
to the problem, and by the time you have loosed yourself from the tar baby,
it may not resemble a baby any more. Bottom line: if you don't know what
you're doing, don't do it.
And .. of course i tried to uninstall and reinstall etc.. This is very

See my Tip above.

Best advice I can give you: Open FrontPage, press F1, and start reading. And
BEFORE you make any more changes to your machine, come here and ask about
anything you're not sure of first.

Thanks for the advice,
I shall try to be more clear:
When i try to access the server extension manager throuth the iis manager,
it takes you to IE (NOT to make a page), but because it's a browses based
application. But then it comes with a page not found error.
The same goes for the browser based help file which doesn't load the index.
So you'r 'start reading' is not very appropriate here.. i have spend hours
trying to figure this out, and have been making websites for years with PWS
and on remote servers with windows server 2003, so i think i iknow a little
about it,'.
If i could have opened my website with localhost or the local loop then i
would not have this problem at all.
And last.. I am NOT trying to make a sharepoint site, i just want to make a
simple 1 page web to see if it works at all.. and that is in FP, but still
it comes with these weird messages..

IIS 5.1 under Windows XP Pro comes with the FP2000 extensions, not the FP2002 extensions, which are
manage via a web interface. To manage the FP2000 extensions, you have to open the IIS MMC.

yes, someone told me that i should install the 2002 extensions.. but it
doens't make much difference. i uninstall all and now reinstalled iis with
the 2000 extensions only.
at least now when i check the extensions the website is recognized (in the
iis mmc), but when i try "open web" then it still says that frontpage should
be installed.
In FP i can't open the web with computername, localhost or 127.0.01..
i think i should go back to W98 and PWS, that always worked fine for
development at least..
thanks for you help anyway

Don't try to open the web in FP, from the within the IIS MMC. Open http://localhost directly in FP.
