FP '98 vs. Newer FPs

I have used FP '98 for so long, it's what I'm used to. I
would like to try a newer version with more tools, but I
fear the learning curve will cut into my time. I heard that
if you install FP2000 when '98 is on your PC, it will
overwrite it. Is this true of all newer versions? I'd like
to get 2002 or 2003 but I want to be able to keep my
current '98 in working mode so I can keep my clients' sites
updated whithout delays in learning a new program. Does
anyone know which versions can be installed without
interferance to FP '98?

You'll want to publish/import your web site into the new
version of Front Page in order to publish the website to a
new folder. New Front Page extensions should be installed
and most importantly consider the system running your FP
web is either a MS server or a Unix type server. Only the
MS server will give your FP website full functionality.

Lastly, the two versions of FP have conflicts, so only the
new version can be used in place of the old version.

Remember, republish your website with the new version.

Note: FP2003 requires you to be running Windows XP.

You can simply install FP2002/2003 to a separate directory; it will run
independent of FP98. Simply change the default location to whatever you
want.

To be honest, FP98 and FP2002 we both pretty bad. FP2003 is a real step up
from either IMO.

FP98 writes some pretty bad and bloated code, and FP2002 has those stupid
"shared borders", which look fine at first, until you try to fix one or get
rid of them to convert to a DWT + CSS based site.

All versions of FP have shared borders, which are used by themes/navigation components.

FP98 and FP2000 can creates leaner pages than FP2002 and FP2003. However if themes, navigation,
DHTML effect or the database components are used, then additional webbot code will be added to pages
no matter which version of FP you use.

..... and if keeping FP98 you will need Windows XP Pro, with IIS
installed. The FP98 PWS will not run on any version of Windows XP.

By the time 7 years have gone by, a lot of things have changed in computers
and software. Your basic problem is one of having to play "catch up" instead
of "keep up." At some point all software becomes obsolete. If you never
upgrade in the meantime, you'll be looking at a situation such as yours.
While it certainly isn't necessary to get EVERY version of software that
comes out, every 2 or 3 years would be a good idea in the future. Yes,
you'll have to adapt to each new version, but between single versions there
is not that much change. Now you have to adapt to 7 years worth of software
evolution.
