FP extensions problem

I have 5 websites published in FP 2003 with no problems until about two
weeks ago. Now, I'm unable to access my site for updating. It's usually one
or two sites I cannot access with the other sites working fine. And, I might
add, it's not the same sites each time. Before I can access the site in FP,
I have to log in to my hosting service and reset FP extensions for that
particular site. Everything is okay after resetting FP until a day or so
later when I try to access again and it's the same problem over...reset FP
ext.

My hosting service says it's probably a corrupted .htaccess since this file
provides authentication for the access to the webserver. When I do a search
for this file, it only shows once on one web and not the other four. Should
I have this file for each web?
