FP Extensions vs FTP

What are the pros and cons of FPSE vs using FTP. I am trying to help a
friend with a web that is created in FP but get error messages indicating
that the host server may not have FPSE installed. I can update and manage
the site just fine using Dreamweaver 8 with FTP. No problems. When I try to
update it from FP we get the error. He has FP 2002 .

We deleted all references to his old web on his PC, updated the remote site
with DW from my PC, then imported the new version into his PC with FP and now
get the error.

FTP will corrupt the extensions in any extended web.
Reinstall the extensions on the web site from the website control
panel, or ask the host, then open the site in FrontPage.
Use File->Publish to an existing, empty, folder on the PC.
Importing will not download the entire website, only those files that
are directly linked from the Home page. Publishing will download all
files, plus databases, shared border files, themes, DWTs, included
files, and navigation data stored in the extensions' meta data.

If the site does not have FP extensions, then use FTP to download the
entire site. Navigation, themes, shared borders etc. may have to be
reconstructed

I'm having a similar problem, that I actually just posted. I redid a site
that has a php script in it. So I did the ftp of the site to the server,
now the front page forms aren't working. I have reinstalled the fp
extensions and publishing back to the server, but clicked on the "don't
publish" for the two files that contain the php scripts. Will this work for
me? I just don't have time right now to learn how to use a php form script
since I already know fp forms.

That will work. Though publishing .php files does not normally have a
detrimental effect (whereas editing with FP sometimes does).
If you are VERY, very careful, you can use FTP with an extended site -
but be very careful. You must NOT FTP any files that contain
FrontPage run-time webbots like forms or hit counters. NEVER FTP any
folders. You must NOT even think about FTPing any folder or file
containing _vti in its name - even thinking about it will corrupt
the extensions
