FP ( something) will not display any graphics in design mode.

Isagold

Hi all and thanks in advance

I am still tearing my hair out and going mad with how Front page will not
let me display or see any graphics in the design mode. ( the web page is
perfect in the preview mode or IE mode). When publishing it now says
thumbs.conflict??
I can't really move on until I get this sorted out as I can't see any
graphics in design mode.
I have attached a graphic image i this link to show how it looks in design
mode in my FP2003. http://www.maydownsstation.com.au/problem_pages.htm
FP or something is now causing all my web sites in other files to have NO
design view for graphics.
Cheers Marjorie.

Can you publish the site as it is right now, to a subweb / subsite under your root web, so that we
can view the pages?

I am pretty new to this so It may take me a while to work that out.
I don't suppose I can just drag it into our web site that is working?

Create a folder and drag into that with all of it images, etc. might allow us to see the problem.

However it comes up with "you are not authorised to view this page.
The links etc don't all work as I have been trying everything to get if
functioning for me.
I will have another go at getting it on the web tomorrow. however the
Maydowns file is doing the same thing now so perhaps something will show in
there??

I think I will eventually have to delete all the files in the web files
folder and start from fresh again and see if this sorts the issues out.

Thanks for your ongoing help.

http://www.maydownsstation.com.au/intouch is a folder not a page

PS
remove all spaces from your file names - illegal html & breaks links

Really, HTML says nothing about spaces in filenames. It's servers that
don't like it. So, yes, it is a good idea to name your files and folders
without spaces or any characters other than letters and numbers (and
underscores and dashes). This means no spaces, no ampersands, no
apostrophes, etc.

I was searching the discussions to see if someone else had this problem and I
can see a couple of people, this one being the most recent. I have exactly
the same problem. I've read all the posts here and they don't pertain to the
problem as it occurs to me and all to Isagold I'm sure. Basically, the
problem is that when I bring up the page in Design view, all the images are
missing and there are just boxes. I think the problem is caused either by:

1/ A server issue: I notice that when I go to Site Settings, it says "No
Server Currently in Use". But if that's the case, why does Front Page
install a server in my c: drive at c:\FrontPage Webs\Server.

2/ Some kind of naming convention for image files that I'm missing, though I
don't know why that should be since I simply use the Front Page insert
picture command.

My feeling it's number 1, but I can't figure it out and it is exasperating.
You basically have to keep clicking back and forth to Preview mode to see
what your page. I'm sure those that have never experienced this think
Isagold and I are crazy or don't know what we're doing, but I assure you, the
problem is real. A friend of mine runs into the same situation. For the
record, I've been using Front Page since 1997, off and on, so I'm not exactly
a newbie.

If anybody has run into this problem and solved it, we'd sure be grateful
for some insight.

Hate to answer my own question but after posting that reply I did some more
searching around and found a post in answer to another question with a
similar theme and from someone called MD Websunlimited I found this little
fix. I tried it and it seemed to fix the problem

"I recall that being a cache problem. Try the following:
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USER%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to log on as an admin (other than the NORMAL user
name) and look in the super hidden folder
CO:\Documents and Settings\NORMALUSERNAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server
Extensions\Cache"

There were other suggestions but these were the first two and the only ones
I did. #2 would make sense. I didn't have a lot of files in the cache but
after I cleared them, the problem corrected itself.

Hope it works for you Isagold.

Peter

Hate to be talking to myself (I call it "working through the problem") but
turns out this only solved the problem one time and then it came right back.
This problem has to be a server/temporary internet file problem because when
I pull up a page I get the message that "couldn't open file
c:\documentsandsettings\%use%\localsettings\temporary internet files\front
page temp dir\fob6c114b.htm. the final file name changes all the time.
Front page obviously seems to be expecting a temprary file to be written away
and it's not happening so it can't find it. Is this a problem caused by my
c:\frontpage webs\server not being turned on as per post above? Anybody with
any ideas?

S

Stefan B Rusynko

Actually #1 appears to be your problem
Any time you open a file in a FP web FP must create a temp file in
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir

W/ FP 2003 the folder below is where your IE Temp files go - clear them out
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
If that is full or limited by your user profile you may be limiting the ability to create more files in the subfolder
\FrontPageTempDir

14d8.htmStefan:

Thanks for your reply. Your answer has not yet solved my problem but I
believe it has put me on the road to a solution. I notice that when I pull
up a apage and images don't appear, FrontPage sends up a message that
"FrontPage couldn't open file in..." and then proceeds to identify a file
name in the ....TemporaryInternetFiles\FrontPageTempDir\907714d8.htm for
example. However, I have looked in that Temporary InternetFiles directory
and it does not contain that folder, or in fact any folder, only cookies. I
have turned on the "show hidden folders" options for the folder and still no
luck. I have even tried to create a FrontPageTemDir folder and put it in
there but it won't let me do that. I even tried reinstalling FrontPage
yesterday but that didn't seem to solve the problem.

I think this is definitely the source of the problem but I am stymied for a
solution. Any further ideas? Thank you for your help.

Kathleen:

Thank you for your post. I managed to find the directory using IE Explorer,
though it's a little tricky for anybody who is folowing this: you can't just
past the address in from your page, you actually have to type it in, or as I
did, start at the C: drive and keep opening folders till you get to the
FrontPageTempDir.

However, when I got there, I found there are only GIF's. Front Page is
looking for temporary .htm files, and there aren't any in that folder.
Assuming it is saving them, where is it saving them to? And if it is not
creating them at all, why not?

I will keep working on this from my end. Grateful for any additonal input
from you or anyone else. (I feel we are getting close to the solution for a
problem that has been plaguing me for a long time.)

Thanks for the link Katherine. I tried the FP cleaner and it made no
difference. I did a little more analysis of the condition and found that
when I first open FP, I can open and close as many pages as I want and the
pages will open with all elements in place. Hoowever, as soon as I change
one page and save it away, from then on, just about every page I open will be
missing graphics in design view, and on opening a page, I get a series of
messages for each page saying that it can't find a particular
alphanumeric.htm file(s) in the temp directory. Interestingly, if I do the
Design/Code switch/F5 refresh action recommended, from then on I can't even
acccess that page in Design view, and have to close and reopen the page to
work on it again. Like I said, I recently reinstalled FP and it did nothing
to improve the situation. Maybe I'll just have to get a new computer because
not being able to see in Design view makes things a little difficult. I am
assuming you have never had this problem? Thanks for your help.

As I said in my last post to Katherine:

"Interestingly, if I do the Design/Code switch/F5 refresh action
recommended, from then on I can't even acccess that page in Design view, and
have to close and reopen the page to work on it again."

The page basically seizes up for me. Somehow, my version of FP is not
creating and/or saving away it's required *.htm temporary files. Or if it is
creating them, it is saving them in a directory that it cannot then
subsequently access. Thanks for your interest. Any assistance greatly
appreciated in solving this problem. I'm sure I'm only one of many who has
encountered the problem.

P

Peter

Finally solved the problem, courtesy of Microsoft. Basically, only way to
solve it was to:

1/ deinstall FP

2/ Run clean up procedure %Temp% and dlete all the files and folders it
identifies (mostly *.tmp files, and some other folders that are for temp
functions)

3/ Run edit and removes any folders referencing FrontPage

4/ Finally, reinstall FrontPage

Whew! But at least now it works properly.
