FP subweb to existing site/godaddy hosting

OK, about twice a year I come back for more help. I'm the church volunteer
lady who performs as webmaster (what a misnomer in my case!). I'm running
FP2003 on a WindowsXPHE (see the site at http://www.stpaul-florin.org ) I've
now been asked to create a password protected staff access area where we can
post project timelines, share info, etc. Our host is godaddy and they do not
support sharepoint services. I've reviewed the previous postings and from
that info it seems to me I can create a new folder in my existing site,
create a new page for that folder, then name the folder as a subsite to the
existing site, and somehow create the password protection. It is at this
point I get confused. Remember I have minimal computer savy, but once you
guys explain things to me in really plain language I seem to be able to get
it. Would someone be willing to take the time to walk me through this
process. You've been so helpful in the past and I really appreciate your
assistance. TIA

Password Protect Part of a Web: (Requires FrontPage extensions on
server, and host must support subwebs with unique permissions)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;301554 (FP2000)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825451 (FP2003)

Protect individual pages: (Requires Windows Server with support for ASP
and Access database)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825498

For another sample of using a database and ASP See

Thanks for the quick response, David. I did go to all those links before
posing the question and while my host does have front page extensions and ASP
and I think that option will work for me, I couldn't make sense out of the
instructions. I know that once I understand how to do it I'll be able to.

I don't want our entire web site password protected, just one section for
staff access. Can I create a new folder and then name it as a subsite as FP
help indicates? I created that page in the original web site, right clicked
in the folder view and clicked make it a subsite. The folder is there and is
added to the navigation as a separate link, but the instructions seem to tell
me to create a totally new web. If I did that how would I link it to the
original site? Godaddy doesn't have admin help (that's why it's cheap) and
I'm just trying to learn what I need to know when I need to know it. Do you
know of an online tutorial that might be more basic for me? TIA

Yes, you would create a sub web (sub site). A sub web "acts" like it's own
web but can still be referenced from the root web like it was another
folder. Once you create your sub web, double-click to open it. Then choose
Tools, Server, Security and set the sub web for Unique Permissions from the
root. Then you would add users that you wanted to have access to the sub
web. YOUR account would be set up as an Administrator and the others would
just have Author and Browse (not Administrator so they couldn't change
permissions). You will have to set up the user accounts first. NOTE: Some
web hosts don't allow you to do this yourself. If you have access to a
control panel on their site where you cans et up users and permission then
you're all set. If not they would have to do all this for you.

See http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/frontpage/HA010429261033.aspx for more
of an explanation.

Oh, that may be where my problem is. The server tab is greyed and I think
that's because I have HE instead of XP. Godaddy does have their own control
panel with tools etc., but they do warn that FrontPage will not work well
with them, that FP will overwrite their panel and the webs won't work
correctly. Well, back to the drawing board for a workaround. I wonder if
there's a way I can set up another pw/protected site say with my ISP and just
link to it. Not using FP but creating something else. Any ideas, or do you
need to send me to another forum? TIA--

You must open the live remote web in FrontPage (not your local web) in order
for the server tab to be available. If it's still grey, then Godaddy
doesn't allow you to use that feature.

Thanks for your input Tom, tried that, greyed there too. I'm still looking
for another way to do the job. TIA
