FP2002 site update problem

J

Has anyone come across this problem ?

When I update my site using the publish command in FP2002 and then view it
in FP all is well. However if I switch to IE6 and view it, the updated pages
don't appear.

At first I thought this was just a case of deleting my temporary internet
files, cookies and the obstinate index.dat cache files. After doing this I
can confirm IE6 hasn't got anything left of the old version by booting IE6
off-line and trying to load my homepage - page not found. Great. But then
if I go back on-line - back come the old pages !

I've confirmed this is not a problem with either my web host or ISP caching
pages and if I access the site from another machine all is well.

Is something going on between FP and IE6 which is preventing me seeing the
updated pages in a local browser ? Incidentally the same problem occurs
regardless of browser - eg in Netscape. So how come FP can see the updated
pages but browsers can't. Weird !

Thanks for any help

Jon

What do you see when you select View Your Remote site from the publish screen

FYI
some hosts and ISPs (AOL) cache pages and they take a while to propagate

Hello Stefan

I see the updated version fine from FP - the problem is when I switch to IE.
I updated the site several days ago now and as I said have checked the
position with both host and ISP - no caches there so they say.

The problem is that something on my machine is reinstating the previous
pages - other machines are seeing the update fine - and I wondered whether
maybe FP caches pages which the browser picks up. It's a real pain having
all these index.dat files all over the place..

Regards

Jon

FP only caches site config info (not browser pages for IE)
FP does not create any index.dat files

Try some FP cleanup
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Well that certainly cleaned out the stables - found about 60 .web files most
of which appeared to relate to my site. On the other hand I can still only
see the old versions of the pages.

Just to confirm the site really has been updated - I downloaded the web to
my hd and viewed it in FP. All OK and I can also read the correct version in
IE offline.

Is there anywhere else to clean out - what about wininet.dll -does that
cache pages somewhere?

Thanks again Stefan

Stefan,

I've just realised that my site is updating but something weird happens to
the home page.

The web uses a FP theme and each page has a banner title. What's happening
is that when I view the home page in a browser something adds the words
"home page" to the title text in the banner ..

Here's the HTML for the banner -

<!--webbot bot="Navigation" S-Orientation="horizontal"
S-Rendering="graphics" B-FirstInsert="TRUE" S-Type="children" --></p>

Any idea how this little bit of magic is being done ?

Regards

Jon

That is not a Banner, it is a Navigation Bar.

The text displayed on each button/link is set in the Navigation View.
Switch to Navigation View, Right-click the appropriate box and choose
Rename. Type in the text to be displayed.

Thanks Ron but it doesn't work - the browser still adds the text "home page"
to the text I put in in navigation view. Weird but true ...

That is not a Banner, it is a Navigation Bar.

The text displayed on each button/link is set in the Navigation View.
Switch to Navigation View, Right-click the appropriate box and choose
Rename. Type in the text to be displayed.

Stefan,

I've just realised that my site is updating but something weird happens
to the home page.

The web uses a FP theme and each page has a banner title. What's
happening is that when I view the home page in a browser something adds
the words "home page" to the title text in the banner ..

Here's the HTML for the banner -

<!--webbot bot="Navigation" S-Orientation="horizontal"
S-Rendering="graphics" B-FirstInsert="TRUE" S-Type="children" --></p>

Any idea how this little bit of magic is being done ?

Regards

Jon

Thanks Stefan - guess it's HD meltdown time. Thanks for your help anyway

wininet.dll -does not cache pages

| Well that certainly cleaned out the stables - found about 60 .web
files most
| of which appeared to relate to my site. On the other hand I can still
only
| see the old versions of the pages.
|
| Just to confirm the site really has been updated - I downloaded the
web to
| my hd and viewed it in FP. All OK and I can also read the correct
version in
| IE offline.
|
| Is there anywhere else to clean out - what about wininet.dll -does
that
| cache pages somewhere?
|
| Thanks again Stefan

The text for nav bars and banners comes from the Navigation View
- right click a page in nav view and select rename
Some nav bar names (like your home page) are automatic from your settings in Tools Site Settings Navigation

I cleared out all the entries in Navigation - still get the same problem:

In FP Select Preview in Browser - page appears fine.

In IE6 or Netscape - page title has "home page" added to it.

Did you change the Site Settings too
- If you have a nav bar including home page it will come from there
Post a URL to the site online

| Hello again stefan
|
| I cleared out all the entries in Navigation - still get the same
problem:
|
| In FP Select Preview in Browser - page appears fine.
|
| In IE6 or Netscape - page title has "home page" added to it.
