FP2003 File>Open or Browse Hangs

J

John

I just installed FP2003 plus SP2 and when I try to browse on the local hard
drive through FP2003, that part of FP2003 hangs for several seconds. It
just "sticks" for several seconds before I can see any files through the
Look In: drop down box.
Is this a common problem?

Well, FrontPage is trying to find a "website" on your computer.
Since you have no websites, every time you select a file or folder and click on it,
FrontPage is trying to determine if it is a website and as a result goes through a whole
series of "behind the scenes checks" and then just sits there and does nothing.
You need to click File > New > "One page web site," or New > "Empty web site" and then
FrontPage will be extremely happy and cooperative.

That's not it. I'm using the software as designed.
I was not trying to find a new website, just editing my existing site
offline before publishing. The drop down menu sticks for about 30 seconds
with no hard visible drive activity. I'm not selecting any files or folders
yet because the drop down menu is frozen. Once it stops hanging, I can then
select folders as needed.

Could be related to the folder last used in the File Open or File Open Site dialog
- especially Network Places, which can take time to update whenever opened the 1st time
- or any network drive if that is where your local site is located

Also the FP web cache file is supposed to speed up opening a FP Site, but if corrupted can actually slow down the process - delete
it using Tools Site Settings Advanced - Delete Files

Why would you be using File Open when you have a site already opened?
- just select the File in Folder List and right click to open or just double click it
